Can SWGAide run on an USB stick or alike?

Post by Zimoon » Wed Feb 24, 2010 11:04 am

If it is possible to make it happen it would be cool to run SWGAide on an USB stick. Here we can discuss that matter, the technical details and our shared experiences.

Update: Success!
I created a path c:/Program Files (x86)/ and put swg there then fired up swgaide and it's all there, mail, harvesters and guards.

Will update some stuff, place some harvesters, takes some screenies etc then move try it on a 3rd computer and see what happens, to be continued...

Great news, indeed :D

Yes, I was more worried that there would be any admin or security issues, that Windows does not allow SWGAide to execute and modify files within SWG from a USB stick.

Some players have had hard problems with SWGAide on Win Vista and Win 7. If that is from ignorance, bad luck, bad advices I give them or they have found in some forum thread here or somewhere else, I don't know. So if it works at USB stick in Windows 7 then SWGAide can execute anywhere where the settings correct, right?

Oh, to clarify, I ran swgaide from an USB stick on Windows Vista 32-bit, not Win7, I will try that when I get back home tonight. However all (well most) admin right problems in Win7 (and Vista) are solved by either disable the UAC or just rightclick and choose "Run as Administator" at launch.

SWG seems to be down at the moment so further testing will have to wait.

Complete Guide how to run SWG+SWGaide on multiple computers using an USB-stick.

This guide has been tested on Windows Vista 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit.
You should have a working installation of SWG and SWGaide, this is refered to as the original installation.

1. Download and copy to the USB the Java JRE and the SWG installer from their homepages.

2. Copy your original installation of SWGaide to your USB

3. Copy your original installation of SWG to your USB and take note of it's EXACT PATH. On my computer it's C:\Program Files (x86)\StarWarsGalaxies but that can be different depending on your operating system.

4. Insert the USB in your other computer and install the Java JRE and the SWG installer, When Station Launcher ask where you want to install Starwarsgalaxies, enter the exact same path as on your original installation.

5. Once Station Launcher is installed, exit Station Launcher.

6. Copy your SWG folder so that it's located in the exact same path as the original installation.

7. Start Station Launcher, log on, go to Options -> Preferences -> Star Wars Galaxies and choose Change Install Location, check that it points to the same path as on your original installation, if not, change it accordingly.

8. Done, both SWG and SWGaide should now work just like on your old computer with all your original settings in both programs. It will work on a third or forth computer as well. Note that due to current limitation on SWGaide, SWG cannot be run off the USB but has to be copied to the new computer as stated above, once (if) we get an option to change the path in SWGaide that will change and it will be truly portable.

Common problems: I had some difficulties getting Station Launcher accept the new path I gave it, a reboot took care of that as stated in step 5. If you getting administrator rights issues in Win7, just right click on station launcher and choose "Run as Administrator" (you must do this every time sadly).

EDIT: After more testing I found out you could skip a few steps, changed the guide accordingly, it is now be a bit more straightforward.

Just to be sure, that I got this right:

I CAN'T use this workaround, if my SWG-folders on my two computers, are not using the exact same path?

That is correct, there is no way to change the path in swgaide. Now this is really an issue if you are alternating between 32 and 64-bit systems or putting your games on another harddrive like d:/games or something.

I'm using this method on a daily basis though and it works great.

I'm no programmer and Zimoon is the guy developing swgaide but I guess a fix in swgaide could be to ask for a new path if the path is not found, or (my personal preference) the ability to start swgaide with a command like -path c:/porn/swg/
that way you could have swgaide as a shortcut on the desktop on each computer with different commandlines depending on the swg path on that particular computer.

Some guys have weird preferences, like leather or latex, whips or cream, but SWGAide

On the serious topic. While I am adding more and more stuff to the Schematics pages and slowly polishing other areas I am also isolating the stuff the depends on the file path that currently is fixed as in rigid. It cannot be changed quickly because there are other stuff that uses this file path and those are in the DAT file, rashly doing changes there breaks compatibility, backwards is bad but people can possibly live with that, but if it is completely incompatible ... that won't do 8)

In other words, I am on but no ETA

This may be a case of TMI, but in an effort to keep certain images on my computer away from prying eyes, I moved them from "My Pictures" to a folder for an online game. So my situation is apparently totally reversed from SwedishOyster's, Im hiding my porn in a game folder, while he is hiding the fact that he plays an online game in his porn folder.

What is the turnaround, if I have to install SWG too?

I am working on this on a slower pace, however, the day this comes true there will be no upgrade errors as most stuff is slowly added to SWGAide version by version and hopefully there will be no backward compatibility issues when we are there.

At this point you could export the precious data and then import it again. That would be resource inventory and harvesters. Is there anything else?

Use a zipper such as WinZip and wrap up the "mails" folder in SWGAide from the old computer and add it the new SWGAide folder at the new computer. That takes care of mails and trade-info. The same if you find any other file you want to keep.

Even after SWGAide is made mobile such files and stuff won't auto-transfer between computers but settings and inventory and so forth will do.

Did I miss something? :D
