Resource usage

Post by Zimoon » Wed Aug 27, 2008 9:53 am

Hi Devs,
I have played a little wit the resource usage page (http://www.swgcraft.co.uk/dev/resource_usage.php) and have found a thing that could be improved, possibly in two ways Currently it works like this:
  1. Start at http://www.swgcraft.co.uk/dev/resource_usage.php
  2. Find the resource class which instantly takes you to ...
  3. ... the result page
  4. Click the link for one of the resources and read whatever
  5. Go back in browser (there is no "previous" or such)
  6. Find yourself at 1)
The intuitive page to end up at when going back would be 3) to be able to do 4). Even if a "previous" link existed there will still be many users using the "Go back" button or Alt-[left-arrow]. So this is improvement number one, back would take the user to 3).

Wishlist

Possibly the resulting page could look like today plus having a little data in a box. The data people want to read at whim is:
  • for each experimental line by itself
    • important stats and their %,
  • amount of units (but it already reads at the current page)
Example:

Code: Select all

Engineering Mastery VI
- Advanced Capacitor Discharge Unit (10 units)
      +-----------------------------------------+
      | Experimental Effectivenes: |
      | Energy: CD 25 / OQ 25 / PE 50 |
      +-----------------------------------------+

Yeah, this is caused by the fact that the page is generated through Javascript (More specifically, what the fancy people call AJAX) and as such, the browser back and forward buttons (Aswell as bookmarking the page) are broken.

I'll look into fixing this, but if I can't, I'll just remove the AJAX part so everyone gets the basic functionality (Select resource, click go, list appears) that the non-Javascript users already have.

Couldn't you do the AJAX like Gmail where the necessary info is stored in the uri?
Another way?

yeah, that's the solution I am looking into doing, it's not as easy as it sounds though as far as I can tell

It should now be possible to use the back-forward buttons as on any other page. Bookmarking should also be working.

Tested in IE 7 and Firefox 3.0.1. Rumors say that Safari lacks proper support for the back-forward button modification (And it seems that's true as I just tested GMail today and it failed)
